This kit is mainly used for blockage removal and descaling smaller metal pipes with multiple bends and junctions. The chains that come with this kit have hard metal bits fused to the cutting edge.
More experienced users prefer using this kit in PVC pipework because the chains are a little more aggressive than the plain chains, but the torque delivery to the chains from a 6mm (1/4") shaft is not powerful enough to cause damage to a PVC pipe if the chains are not kept in a stationary position for a long period of time.
The tool is lightweight and compact, so it can easily fit into a toolbox, and is set up in seconds, because you only need to attach it to your drill, and you are ready to go.
Toilets
Most clients report that they use this kit on day-to-day toilet blockages because the shaft is covered with a chemical and heat resistant sleeve which prevents damage to porcelain, so there is no need to remove a toilet pan in order to reach a soft blockage in the toilet waste line in close proximity to the toilet.
Blockage removal
Perfect for removing fat deposits in pipes connected to grease traps, or for removing soft blockages in bath waste pipes.
Descaling
Besides blockage removal, this tool has the added advantage of descaling pipes, so you can remove urine scale from a pipe faster, more effectively than trying to break it up with a jetting machine. This way, you will not find large broken up chunks of scale that have blocked the pipe further down the line.
Boiler cleaning
Many of our clients have purchased this tool to be used as a dry industrial tube cleaning system, for firetube cleaning and maintenance. Remove hard deposits in tubes using the centrifugal forces of the chains which keep the tool centred in the pipe, and ensure that the entire inner circumference of the pipe is cleaned equally.
The chains are made from stainless steel to prevent oxidation, and are fastened to the shaft with hex screws, so they can be adjusted to accommodate slight pipe size variations.
The 6mm (1/4") shaft included in this kit is our most flexible shaft, and yet our shaft does not compromise on rigidity. This combination of properties will prevent the shaft from coiling on the inner wall of larger pipes over long distances.
The shaft sleeve has friction rings to protect the ends from wear. The friction rings on each end prevent dirt from building up between the shaft and the sleeve, as this would reduce the efficiency and longevity of the tool.
The kit includes:
A 6mm (1/4") flexible shaft with a sleeve, friction rings, a shaft lock, and a spring
Drill to Shaft Adapter - 6mm shaft
Lightweight X-Tip (no drill head) DN32mm/1.3" for 6mm (1/4") Shaft, 1 chain
Lightweight X-Tip (no drill head) DN50mm/2" for 6mm (1/4") Shaft, 2 chains
X- tip Mini Chain DN50mm/2" for 6mm (1/4") Shaft, 2 chains - 2 chains with 3 links with Xtip bits
Before you order the longest length possible, consider this:
The 6mm shaft delivers best performance in lengths under 15 meters (49.21ft). Longer lengths are more suitable for softer blockages such as grease traps, because the longer shaft has less torque delivery to the chains.
Shaft shrinkage
When we manufacture the shafts we wind them in a long straight line. They are then wound onto a large diameter spool, and later cut into smaller pieces before we assemble them and deliver them to you. This means that when you first use your shaft, you might notice that the ends shrink a little. Usually this is more evident on the drill end. This is perfectly normal since the shaft is subjected to the stresses of multiple bends and torque for the first time. After the first inner strands of the shaft settle into their permanent position the shrinkage will cease. Usually this affects around 3” (75mm) on either end of the shaft. When you notice this, simply cut off the shrunken section with an angle grinder, and reconnect your chains and drill. It is not necessary to weld the ends, but if you prefer to do this please try to avoid too much heat on the shaft.
Lubricate your shaft before first use
Aviation law prohibits us from delivering products which could be considered flammable so we send the shafts without lubricant in the sleeve.
Please be sure to lubricate your flexible shaft before using it, and then check the lubrication every few weeks. This not only ensures the longevity of your shaft, but also makes it more efficient over longer distances. Here is a video we made on how to lubricate your shaft:
