Drill Head vs. Drain Cleaning Chain with Drill Head — What’s the Difference?

Heavy-duty Croco drain chain for cast iron and clay pipes (drain cleaning chain)

If you’re trying to choose the right tool for drain cleaning, you might come across two similar options: a standalone drill head and a drain cleaning chain with a drill head attached. The distinction is straightforward — one is fixed to a chain, and the other is sold on its own.

Understanding Drill Heads

Drill heads are specialized attachments used to break through tough blockages in pipes. They come in several designs, each suited to different types of pipe conditions. Here are some common options we offer:

  • Mini Mole – A small, precise head ideal for narrow pipes or tight bends.
  • Croco Mole – Designed for more aggressive cutting, perfect for tougher blockages.
  • Crown Drill Head – Great for dealing with heavy scale and hardened buildup (not suitable for PVC).
  • Croco Drill Head – A slightly less aggressive option, making it well-suited for PVC and more delicate materials.

Each type is available as a standalone head, giving you the freedom to choose based on the job at hand.

Drain Cleaning Chains That Come with Drill Heads

In some setups, the drill head is already mounted on the chain itself. This integrated design combines the chain’s flexibility with the cutting performance of the drill head.

Currently, we offer the following configurations where the drill head comes attached to the chain:

  • Croco Drill Head on Chain
  • Crown Drill Head on Chain

These are especially effective when you want added cutting power without having to change attachments during the job.

Choosing the Right Configuration

If you see an option in our shop that asks, “Would you like a drill head?”, it’s simply asking whether you prefer:

  • A chain that already includes a mounted drill head, or
  • A chain without a drill head (to use on its own or with a separate head)

The core difference is how the tool is configured — the performance goal is the same: clearing obstructions inside pipes.

Final Thoughts

A standalone drill head gives you more flexibility if you want to switch between different heads depending on the situation. But if you’re looking for convenience and maximum cutting performance straight out of the box, a chain with an attached Croco or Crown drill head is a solid choice.
